Monday--Reducing Trash

Going through the trash I collected from Sunday energized me to follow through on an intention I’ve had for a long time—composting. That means buying some worms down the line, but it will all work since it will benefit our garden. I also found myself grateful for the fact that the city of Fullerton allows people to recycle quite a few things, including cardboard, paper, glass, tin, and aluminum. I also put together the traveling kit of things to use: a cup, a cloth napkin, utensils, reusable bags, and Tupperware. I love the idea, except that you have to keep it close at hand to make sure you use it. One of my friends carries a ceramic cup around with him constantly, and I find this quite quirky and idiosyncratic. Nice to know you can make a difference with such small steps. Which leads to the question of just how much of an impact does one person make? Perhaps it begins with the gradual momentum that individuals joining together create. What sustains any movement, though, is a coherent theoretical, ethical, and moral position on an issue—one that appeals to people in many ways. Sustainability is one such concept, except its an idea still looking for a good public relations firm. Hopefully we’ll author one as we learn to walk the talk.
